Shortsnout scorpionfish (Scorpaenopsis obtusa). X-ray of a section through a shortsnout scorpionfish,showing the spines (top) along its back. Scorpionfish (family Scorpaenidae) are some of the world's most venomous fish. They have venomous glands in the spines of their fins,which can deliver a powerful numbing toxin. This specimen was collected in the Philippines in 1908,but was not named as a new species until 2001. It measures 10 centimetres in length
