Bronze age Minoan-period sandstone quarry at Paliopoli on the east coast of Kythira. The site is easily accessible both by land and sea,and is identified by many scholars with ancient Skandeia,a harbor town already known since the age of Homer. This quarry can be characterized as an organized quarry of limestone,a soft and easy-to-carve stone, appropriate for the extraction of building material and for the carving of mortuaries. The Minoan civilization was an Aegean Bronze Age civilization that arose on the island of Crete, where it was rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th century through the work of British archaeologist Arthur Evans | |
