Block dams (blokkendam in Dutch) are breakwaters used in many locations along the Dutch North Sea coast, but in other coastal reaches of the world as well. They serve to break waves and rough seas in places like harbors or inlets, where other protection like natural dunes or constructed dikes are missing or not feasible. Block dams are composed of concrete cubes or lumps of natural rock. In the Netherlands they exist in all varieties and lengths, the short ones 50 to 100 meters, longer ones over several km. The one here displayed is a short block dam at the Deltapark Neeltje Jans in Zeeland, the Netherlands | |
