Armand Hippolyte Fizeau (1819-1896),French physicist. Fizeau is best known for determining the speed of light in collaboration with Leon Foucault. He also measured the speeds of light in moving water and predicted the redshifting of electromagnetic waves. His earliest work was concerned with improvements in the newly introduced photographic imaging processes. One of the disadvantages of the Daguerreotype was the extreme fragility of the silver-mercury amalgam image. In 1840 Fizeau published a process of toning the image by treating the daguerrotype image with a solution of gold chloride and the fixing agent sodium hyposulphite. This increased contrast and protected the image from abrasion and also prevented oxidation of the silvered plate | |
