Milky eagle owl or Verreaux's eagle owl (Bubo lacteus),standing on the ground by a tree whilst thermoregulating during the hot summer months in the Kalahari. This owl inhabits forests and grasslands near rivers and lakes in Africa below the Sahara. It is the largest owl on the continent,reaching lengths of up to 70 centimetres. It is active at night,hunting a wide variety of animals,including monkeys,hares and large birds. Each owl has a large territory which it rarely leaves,although the young have to travel great distances to establish a range of their own.
