Leslie (Laszlo) Balassa (1903-1992),Hungarian-US chemist. Born in Hungary at the time of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy,Balassa was awarded a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Vienna in 1926. During his career,he worked in Mexico as a metallurgist,and spent 14 years as a research chemist at the Du Pont chemical company. From 1944,he founded companies that manufactured his inventions. These included the pharmaceutical research and development company Lescarden Ltd.
