Sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) bone preparation. These bones are being prepared for high pressure jet spray cleaning to remove oil and fat. Whale bones contain a honeycomb-like internal structure that stores fat. This can ooze from the bones causing problems with bone preservation and museum display. This whale was first found stranded on Henne Strand,Jutland,Denmark. It measured 14 meters in length and weighed an estimated 30 tonnes. It was dissected on the beach by scientists and then the bones soaked and cleaned in water to remove all the tissue. Conservators will prepare and assemble the skeleton for display to the public at the Zoological Museum in Copenhagen,Denmark | |
