Beached sperm whale body. Dead male sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) found on Henne Strand,Jutland,Denmark. This specimen measured 14 meters in length and weighed an estimated 30 tonnes. It was discovered alongside another stranded sperm whale. Dead whales quickly decompose. The resulting gases build up inside the body causing a danger of explosion. Scientists will dissect this specimen for analysis and study. It is not known exactly why mass whale strandings occur. Possible causes include illness, disease, injury, inability to cope with shallow water and interference by military sonar | |
