Supernova remnant. Composite optical and X-ray image of the supernova remnant (SNR) G272.2-03.2. This shell of expanding gas from the explosive death of a star is between 6000 and 16,000 light years from Earth in the constellation of Vela. The hot gas (green) is glowing at high-energy X-ray wavelengths. The two bright spots (yellow) at the right edge of the shell are where gas is impacting the surrounding medium. This SNR is only a few thousand years old,and the expansion will take hundreds of thousands of years to slow down. Discovered in 1994 with ROSAT,this image was obtained on 11 December 2001 by ESA's XMM-Newton space telescope | |
