Solar disc and corona. Composite image of the Sun and its atmosphere (corona) during the total solar eclipse observed in July 2010 in Atoll Hao,French Polynesia. The image of the Sun is from the SWAP (Sun Watcher using APS and Image Processing) sensor on the Proba-2 satellite operated by the European Space Agency. The filter used here displays the Sun in 174-angstrom light. The image of the corona was taken from the ground during the eclipse of the Sun by the Moon. The Sun's corona, not usually visible due to the brightness of the solar disc,is seen during a total solar eclipse | |
