Scott's polar party burial cairn. Cross and cairn erected over the tent containing the dead bodies of British explorers Robert Falcon Scott,Henry Bowers,and Edward Wilson. A group of five (Scott,Bowers,Evans,Wilson,Oates) reached the South Pole on 17 January 1912 after a trek of more than two months,but were beaten there by Amundsen's Norwegian party. Scott and the others in the polar party died on their return journey,the final three perishing of cold,exhaustion and starvation in around March 1912,trapped by a blizzard. Other members of the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913) found the tent and Scott's diaries in November 1912
