Dr Gertrude Elion,US biochemist and pharmacologist and winner of the 1988 Nobel Prize for medicine. This was in recognition of over 40 years of work in developing a range of drugs to fight leukaemia,malaria,gout,organ transplant rejection,herpes virus infection and bacterial infection. Elion shared the prize with Dr George Hitchings,a colleague at Burroughs-Wellcome Research Laboratories in the U.S. since 1945 and Sir James Black,of Kings College Hospital Medical School,London
