Corynebacterium diphtheriae,Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Diphtheria is a bacterial disease caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae,an aerobic,gram-positive,pleomorphic bacillus. Diphtheria is a contagious infection that mainly affects the nose and throat. Less commonly,it can also affect the skin. The bacteria spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes, and droplets of their saliva enter another person's mouth or nose. Before vaccination programmes were introduced, diphtheria was a very common condition and one of the leading causes of death in children. However, diphtheria is still present in countries where less people are vaccinated. Magnification: x 5000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide | |
