Partial lunar eclipse. Lunar eclipses occur when the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon. A partial lunar eclipse occurs when only a portion of the Moon is fully eclipsed, passing into the Earth's umbra. This shaded portion is at upper centre. The rest of the Moon has dimmed as it passes into the Earth's penumbra (a phenomenon known as a penumbral eclipse). Photographed from Chascomus,Argentina,on 4 June 2012 | |
