Quantum mirage, scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) image. Thirty-six cobalt atoms were arranged in an elliptical structure known as a 'quantum corral'. This has the effect of producing a mirage as electron waves in the copper substrate interact with a magnetic cobalt atom (pink) at one of the foci of the ellipse, producing a phantom cobalt atom (not actually present) at the other focus.
