Total solar eclipse sequence. Montage of images of the Sun being eclipsed by the Moon during a total solar eclipse. The sequence shows the path traced by the Moon and Sun in the sky. Typically, the entire sequence of a solar eclipse takes some three hours from first contact to last contact. The central image shows the moment of totality, when the Sun's corona (a cloud of plasma surrounding the Sun) becomes visible. The corona is normally obscured by the brightness of the main part of the Sun. Total solar eclipses usually occur less than once a year, and can only be seen from a small area of the Earth's surface | |
