Limestone pavement. This limestone rock has been shaped by natural chemical erosion. Carbon dioxide in the air dissolves in rainwater to form carbonic acid. This acid erodes the limestone rock as the water flows over it. Landscapes formed by this type of erosion are referred to as karst landscapes. When exposed on the surface,as here,it is called a limestone pavement. Photographed in South Tyrol,Italy,in the Dolomites mountain range | |
