A silicaceous limestone ledge exposed at low tide on a high energy shore at Warrnambool,Victoria,Australia. High energy shores are characterised by exposure to large bodies of water (in this case the Southern Ocean) and frequent storms, resulting in powerful wave action at the shoreline. This results in the development of a rich flora of marine algae ('seaweeds'). The large brown strap-like seaweed is the brown alga,Laminaria digitata. Elsewhere the substrate rock is covered with a mixed population of both brown and green algae. Below centre,at the edge of the rock, the pink encrusting organism is a species of the red alga,Lithophyllum | |
