Quasar ULAS J1120+0641,artwork. The very hot extremely luminous quasar at centre of the image is very bright at ultraviolet wavelengths. This high-energy radiation from the quasar ionizes the surrounding hydrogen gas (red). Located over 28 billion light years from Earth,in the constellation of Leo,it is seen in the early history of the universe (13 billion years ago). In the background are faint compact galaxies that have just formed. The hot stars in these galaxies also ionize their surroundings (red rings),but over a far smaller volume than this quasar,a much more active object. Artwork published in 2011 | |
