Lunar craters. 19th-century artwork of some of the craters visible on the near side of the Moon. The three craters at upper left are: Fra Mauro Crater (top left,101 kilometres across),Bonpland Crater (centre left,60 kilometres across),and Parry Crater (near centre,47 kilometres across). The small crater at lower centre is Tolansky Crater (13 kilometres across). At lower right is Guericke Crater (63 kilometres across). The mapping of the Moon with telescopes started with Galileo in 1610,and then developed further as telescopes improved to allow mountain and crater shadows to be recorded.
