View of the shop-floor of the Soho Foundry showing steam engines under construction. The radical improvements by James Watt of the Newcomen design improved the power, efficiency and cost-effectiveness of steam engines and when he was granted a 25-year patent in 1775 he went into partnership with Matthew Boulton to design and build them commercially. Being highly successful, they eventually needed their own dedicated premises. Opened in 1796,the Soho Foundry had built 41 engines by 1800,the year Watt retired and was a significant part of the 18th century Industrial Revolution in Britain | |
