| James Nasmyth (1808-1890),Scottish engineer. Nasmyth was the son of a landscape painter in Edinburgh. Although his formal schooling finished when he was 12,Nasmyth watched local engineers at work to understand their processes. After making his own brass foundry,Nasmyth obtained a post in London and began to design machine tools. Fascinated with steam engines,he went on to design the first steam hammer. A few years later he patented it and made his fortune. He retired at 48 to become an astronomer.
