Slate mining. Worker at a slate mill sawing slabs of slate into smaller section that will be split to produce roof tiles. Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic rock that has very distinct cleavage planes. This makes it very easy to split into sheets. These slabs were cut out of an underground rockface at the mine. Slate's principal use is to make roofing tiles, although it is also used to make large objects such as optical benches and billiard tables | |
