Annular solar eclipse sequence. Solar ring forming around the Moon during an annular solar eclipse, with partial views at right. Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes across the Sun as seen from Earth. This only occurs at New Moon, and is most commonly a partial eclipse. When the Moon is at a distant point in its orbit,an annular solar eclipse occurs and the corona (revealed in a total eclipse) remains hidden due to the brightness of the solar ring.
