The distinctive blue edged collection label of the pioneering archaeologist Sir John Evans on a flat drilled stone axe from Mississippi 1877. The label records its collector as Lewis Evans,John Evan's son,who made a trip to the USA in that year and probably presented the specimen to his fathers on his return. Most of John Evan's unrivalled collection of stone implements was given to his other son,Arthur Evans (the discoverer/populariser of Minoan Crete). Arthur Evans placed the collection with the Ashmolean where he was affiliated, but perhaps this specimen was returned by John or Arthur to Lewis Evans as its original collector. It is in private hands today. Lewis Evans went on to provide the base collection for the science museum in Oxford | |
