Lake on Titan,Cassini image. Titan (5150 kilometres across) is Saturn's largest moon, with a thick nitrogen atmosphere and orange haze. The glint (white) at top is due to infrared reflecting off a lake on the surface of Titan. Such specular reflections are only visible in infrared, due to the haze obscuring the surface in visible light. This reflection is from a large lake called Kraken Mare,in Titan's northern hemisphere. Titan's lakes contain hydrocarbons such as methane and ethane. This image was obtained on 8 July 2009,by the Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) on the Cassini spacecraft that is in orbit around Saturn | |
