Carpathia officers with Titanic cup. RMS Titanic struck an iceberg on the night of 14 April 1912 in the North Atlantic during its maiden voyage,and sank with the loss of 1517 lives. Some 710 survivors were rescued by RMS Carpathia,captained by Arthur Henry Rostron (1869-1940,behind cup). The Carpathia returned to New York with the survivors on 18 April,departing on 20 April to resume its cruise. On its return to New York,this silver 'loving cup' was given to Rostron on 29 May by a committee representing the survivors. Rostron also received several medals (on lapel).
