Total solar eclipse. Sunspots seen on the Sun during a total solar eclipse. The disc of the Moon is moving over the disc of the Sun. At totality the Moon fits over the Sun and only the Sun's corona (atmosphere) is visible. Here, this point of totality has not yet been reached, and sunspots (dark areas) can be seen at lower left on the crescent-shaped Sun. Total solar eclipses usually occur less than once a year and can only be seen from a small area of the Earth's surface. Photographed in March 2006 from Turkey | |
