Met Office tabulating machine. This is a Hollerith machine,a mechanical system that is used to process data in the form of cards with holes punched in them. It is named after the US statistician Herman Hollerith (1860-1929),who invented it for use in collating census data. Here,it is being used to process data on climate and weather. The data is represented by the position of the holes punched into cards of standard size. This model is from the British Tabulating Machine Company, which made machines like this between 1920 and 1959. The Met Office is the UK's national weather monitoring and forecasting service | |
