Andromeda Galaxy (M31),XMM-Newton X-ray observatory image. This image is in the X-ray region of the spectrum and shows the endpoints of stellar evolution, such as shockwaves from supernovae, neutron stars, and black holes. The galactic centre (centre) is a strong source of X-rays. Andromeda, the nearest large galaxy to our own,is around 140,000 light years across, and is located 2.5 million light years away in the constellation of the same name. This image was obtained with the EPIC and OM instruments in 2010 and published in early 2011. For this image combined with infrared data, see C010/9736 | |
