Andromeda Galaxy (M31),Herschel Space Observatory (HSO) image. This image is in the far-infrared region of the spectrum,showing the dust lanes in the spiral arms,heated by newly formed stars. Andromeda,the nearest large galaxy to our own,is around 140,000 light years across,and located 2.5 million light years away in the constellation of the same name. This image was obtained with the SPIRE and PACS instruments in 2010 and published in early 2011. This study is part of the HELGA (Herschel Exploitation of Local Galaxy Andromeda) project.
