Vegas Valley leopard frog (Rana fisheri),artwork. This frog, once found in Las Vegas Valley,USA,was thought to be extinct since the 1940s. However,in 2011 an analysis of the DNA of preserved specimens found them to be identical to the Chiricahua leopard frog (Rana chiricahuensis). This frog is found in several locations in Mexico and the USA,but is threatened and has been lost from much of its range. The loss from the Las Vegas Valley is now considered an example of extirpation (local extinction),rather than complete extinction | |
