Golden Gate Bridge. Artwork of the Golden Gate Bridge, looking north towards the Marin Peninsula. This suspension bridge took four years to build and opened on 28 May 1937. At that time,it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. It is used for road, cycle and pedestrian transport from the city of San Francisco to Marin County, crossing the opening from San Francisco Bay (right) to the Pacific Ocean (left). The two towers are 1280 metres apart (shore-to-shore distance is about 2.7 kilometres),and the bridge is 27 metres wide. The two towers rise 227 metres above the water, and the clearance below the bridge is 67 metres at high tide | |
