Cigar Galaxy (M82),Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image. This starburst galaxy has a bright disk (blue) of rapidly forming young stars, and plumes of glowing hydrogen (red). The fast rate of star formation has produced a huge concentration of stars which leads to a combined stellar wind that compresses gas to make millions more stars. This starburst period of formation will subside in a few tens of millions of years. M82 is about 12 million light years distant,in the constellation Ursa Major. This image combines visible and infrared observations, and was obtained in March 2006 with HST's Advanced Camera for Surveys instrument | |
