Nuclear fusion research. Target chamber (2 millimetres wide) of deuterium–tritium (DT) gas at the National Ignition Facility (NIF),at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory,California,USA. This site is attempting to initiate and control hydrogen fusion as a sustainable energy source for future use. The beams from 192 lasers are focused onto this capsule, totalling 1.8 megajoules of energy. Below the capsule is part of a cylindrical gold case called a hohlraum, through which the lasers pass. The first experiments were performed here in 2009,after more than a decade of construction | |
