Mikhail Bakunin (1814-1876),Russian revolutionary. In his youth,Bakunin studied philosophy in Moscow,including works by Kant and Hegel. By 1840 he had become a socialist,spending time in many European cities,including Paris and Berlin,supporting revolutionary movements,including those of 1848. He agitated for Russian revolution,but was arrested,imprisoned and then exiled. He escaped in 1861 and settled in Italy. He became a leading figure in the communist organisation First International,but was expelled in 1872 after criticising Karl Marx.
