Martian landslides. Coloured satellite image of landslides (right centre) in the Ganges Chasma region of Mars. The Ganges Chasma is a deep canyon in the huge Valles Marineris system on Mars. Colours indicate nighttime temperatures, ranging from red (warmest) to blue (coolest). The red lines are outcrops of olivine basalt. Olivine decomposes readily in water and so its presence suggests that this area has been dry for much of Mars' history.
