Cerivastatin. Molecular model of the withdrawn cholesterol-lowering drug cerivastatin (Baycol). Atoms are represented as spheres and are colour-coded: carbon (dark grey),hydrogen (light grey),oxygen (red),nitrogen (blue) and fluorine (green). This drug is a type of statin. Statins are used to reduce the levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol ('bad' cholesterol) in the bloodstream. High levels of LDL cholesterol are a major cause of heart disease and strokes. Cerivastatin was withdrawn by the manufacturer in 2001 due to a high occurence of fatal rhabdomyolysis,the rapid breakdown (lysis) of skeletal muscle
