Edward Walter Maunder (1851-1928),British astronomer. Maunder was a photographic and spectroscopic assistant at the Royal Observatory,Greenwich, where he studied sunspots and other solar phenomena. He noticed that although sunspot activity usually followed an 11 year cycle, between the years of 1645 and 1715 there was virtually no sunspot activity. This period would become known as the Maunder minimum. Maunder also studied the surface of Mars and proved that the so-called "canals" on its surface were an optical illusion and not evidence of life | |
