Rare endemic Swiss tulips. These are Tulipa grengiolensis tulips, and are found only near the village of Grengiols,Switzerland,in a small alpine field called the Chalberweid. The tulips became known beyond the village when a visiting botanist discovered them in 1946. Tulips were introduced to Europe from Turkey in the 16th century. It is thought that these tulips were introduced to the area accidentally, possibly in wagons of wheat. The tulips took root and grew with the rye crops grown in the area. As the amount of rye cultivation has decreased, the tulips are now endangered. In 1998,a project to reverse this decline was started | |
