Orchid flowers (Dactylorhiza majalis alpestris). Only some of the flowers in this cluster are open (lower centre). The open flowers are displaying a specialised, patterned petal called the lip. This attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. The Dactylorhiza orchids are terrestrial orchids (ones that grow in the soil),found in bogs and meadows throughout Europe. There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers | |
