Nodules of Rhizobium leguminosarum, the nitrogen- fixing bacteria,on the roots of the French bean,Phaseolus vulgaris. The bacteria are found on the roots & root hairs of certain leguminous plants (peas, beans, clover) that are unable to convert atmospheric nitrogen into organic nitrogen compounds. In a symbiotic relationship the bacteria convert nitrogen for the plants & in return receive nourishment for themselves. Magnification X1.2 (at 35mm size) | |
