Treponema sp. Colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) showing oral spirochaete bacteria,Treponema sp. Spirochaete bacteria are elongated, spirally twisted motile forms. Treponema species are Gram- negative parasites or pathogens in the mouth, intestinal tract and genital regions of humans and other animals. The species seen here is morphologically and structurally identical to Treponema pallidum, which causes syphilis in humans. Syphilis may cause severe damage to the heart, blood vessels, brain and spinal cord. Treatment with penicillin drugs is effective if administered in the early stages.
