Lactobacillus brevis. Immuno-electron microscopic (IEM) image of the ethanol and lactic acid producing bacteria Lactobacillus brevis. IEM uses antibodies to attach specific molecules (in this case gold particles) to particular parts of the cell. Here, protein particles on the surface of this Gram-positive cell are seen as dark red spots. Lactic acid producing bacteria such as this are used extensively in the food industry,in areas such as bread, cheese and yoghurt production. Lactobacillus are found naturally and harmlessly occurring in humans and animals,as part of the vaginal and intestinal flora. Magnification: x73,000 at 6x7cm size.
