False-colour transmission electron micrograph of the bacterium Haemophilus influenzae (oval shape at top left). The confused mass of red & yellow is cell wall material from 2 other bacteria that have broken apart. A Gram-negative bacillus,H. influenzae is an important pathogen in children aged 1-5 years. It colonizes the upper respiratory tract in most humans within the first months of life, and is usually harmless. But it may spread locally and cause disease of the lower respiratory tract (bronchitis and pneumonia). Also, certain strains are the most common cause of bacterial meningitis and epiglottitis in children. Magnification: x17,000 at 6x4.5 cm size | |
