False colour scanning electron electron micrograph (SEM) of Fusobacterium nucleatum,a species of Gram negative, anaerobic bacilli (rod-shaped bacteria). Species of Fusobacterium are typically long and tapered at both ends ('fusiform'). The genera Fusobacterium, along with Bacteroides and Leptotrichia comprise the Bacteroides group of bacteria. Members of this group do not form spores and are usually non-motile. All organisms in the group are obligate animal parasites, forming part of the intestinal flora of a range of organism from termites to primates, and including humans.
