Boron nitride crystal structure, molecular model. Boron atoms are green, nitrogen atoms are blue. Boron nitride is a compound that shares many properties with elemental carbon,as boron immediately precedes carbon in the periodic table and nitrogen immediately follows it. It can adopt any of the three main crystal forms of carbon; diamond, graphite or fullerene. This is the graphitic form, called hexagonal boron nitride (h- BN,g-BN or a-BN). It has a similar structure to graphite, being formed of sheets of hexagons. These can easily slide over each other, making the compound useful as a dry lubricant. It is also included in ceramics, plastics and glasses for its low electrical resistance and high thermal conductivity | |
