Graphite. Coloured scanning tunnelling micrograph (STM) of the surface of graphite,a form of the element carbon. The hexagonal pattern is related to an identical arrangement of the carbon atoms. To create this three-dimensional image,a needle was scanned just over the surface of the graphite. The needle followed the surface contours by main- taining the same electron density,a measure of distance from the atoms. Magnification unknown | |
