Aerial photograph of the Fermi National Accelerat- or Laboratory (Fermilab) near Chicago,Illinois. In the distance is the circular service road which marks the location of the 2km diameter underground ring of the Tevatron accelerator. Protons are accelerated in the Tevatron up to energies of 1000 GeV (1 TeV). They are then deflected in an underground "switchyard" at upper right to form separate beams that service the three main experimental areas at lower centre & bottom of the picture. Since 1986,the Tevatron has also operated as a collider, smashing accelerated protons & antiprotons together | |
