Steam explosions occur as the lava comes in contact with the ocean creating a superheated cloud of hydrochloric acid. Fire hose lava occurs when a lava tube is exposed at a sea cliff. This cliff is approximately 40 meters high and the stream being created is roughly 2 meters in diameter where it first emerges, fanning out as it falls.
